Over the course of the module, pitch portfolios will be collected, annotated presented for tutor and peer feedback (equivalent to 500 words).

Assessment 2: Written Assignment

Commissioning proposal: Develop a business proposal for a new television or audio-visual format, aimed at a specific (existing) broadcaster or platform. This will comprise a rationale (1,000 words) explaining how your idea complements the broadcaster’s current strategy and existing/planned output, and a written pitch (1,000 words), aiming to make your idea persuasive to the chief commissioner. The rationale will be submitted one week before the pitch.

Literature review and research plan: 2,000-word literature review of political economic or production studies approaches to the media, concluding with a plan for conducting your own primary research into a specific media industry/organisation.                              

<p>Whether the emphasis is on journalism, film, music, TV, broadcast sports, video games, online streaming, or another media form, the production of creative content always takes place in the context of specific industrial and organisational structures. This module provides you with an introduction to the key theories, concepts and methods needed to understand those structures, their impact on the professionals and organisations working within them, and the ways in which they shape the media landscape. The module places particular emphasis on political economic approaches to the media and production studies, but attention will also be given to theories of creativity, branding, and industrial conceptions of their audiences.</p>
