BA (Hons) Business Administration and Management is professionally linked to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) with the course being accredited by them. The CMI has approved modules within BA (Hons) Business Administration and Management as being current and relevant to management with learning and assessment meeting their professional standards. Students completing the recognised modules (and also electing to enrol with the CMI) will be awarded the Institute’s level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership upon successful completion of their Honours Degree.  The main aims of the course are to: provide a broad-based education in general business and management to students from varying backgrounds who are seeking graduate status to provide a contemporary study of general management and administration and the role of managers, leaders and administrators in all types of organisations  adopt a strategic perspective in order to reflect the need for organisations to adapt strategies to dynamic and often short-term market conditions provide a learning experience in those key areas of general management perceived to be relevant to the performance of organisations in the 21st century provide a foundation for a career in business and management, including association with an appropriate professional body and facilitation of the attainment of professional qualifications

On successful completion you will be able to:

Critically analyse the business environment in which an organisation operates including a consideration of the dynamic and changing nature of business and meeting the needs of stakeholders.

Evaluate and apply models and theories for the effective management of organisations.

Analyse and evaluate a range of business data and sources of information to undertake evidence-based decision-making.

In conjunction with their degree students have the opportunity to become members of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). The CMI supports a number of initiatives on the course allowing students to identify with the wider professional community.

Students will be able to exhibit an ability to use a range of techniques to support independent learning to provide a foundation for life-long learning and personal and professional development.

To work collaboratively in a group with people from diverse cultures to meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

A one week induction programme will be held at the beginning of the course to orientate the students towards studying in an HE context.  Use will be made of ILPs (Individual Learning Profiles) in order to identify students at risk. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used … For more content click the Read More button below. Assessment will similarly vary depending on module focus and outcomes. However, assessment may include the following: unseen examinations, oral presentations, individual or group essays or reports, case studies, in-class tests, peer assessment, individual reflective learning portfolios, time constrained assignments, group projects and an individual management project.   Module assessment will comply with Huddersfield Business School’s assessment guidelines and reflect honours-level requirements. Formative assessment will be incorporated at a modular level for all modules.  This will allow students to gain self, peer and/or tutor feedback on their work before formal summative assessment takes place. Personal Development Planning (PDP) will be embedded in the core modules to ensure students have access to the resources and skills essential for study. Students will also have access to careers support and guidance for further study upon completing their degree.

Support for Students and their Learning

Students will be supported by a number of staff associated with the course, as indicated below:

  • module tutors and module leaders, in the context of module-specific problems
  • year tutors: each year cohort will have a year tutor with specific responsibility for matters affecting the year group as a whole.
  • course leader, with responsibility for course-level issues and as an alternative source of support to year tutors
  • personal tutor system: all students will be allocated a personal tutor within the Department of Management. Personal tutoring for these students will be proactive and skills and learning focused, whilst also accommodating those with more specific difficulties
  • where students have special educational needs alternative assessment strategies or documentation formats may be provided. Student support is also available through the Business School’s Learning Development Group (for example regarding dyslexia) and the University’s Disability Office.

In compliance with the Equality Act (2010) reasonable adjustments will be made to accommodate individual needs based on a student’s assessment with the University Disabilities Office

Criteria for Admission

The University’s policy for Admissions is outlined in the Regulations for taught students - University of Huddersfield

  • A relevant UK Higher National Diploma or Foundation degree with a merit profile value of 240 credits or equivalent. Students should consult UCAS website (ucas.ac.uk) for current requirements.
  • Mature students are considered on an individual basis
  • Candidates from outside the UK are expected to offer a Higher National Diploma or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Qualifications offered must be equivalent to 240 credits or 120 ECTS.
  • In addition, candidates whose first language is not English are required to provide evidence of fluency through IELTS (minimum score 6.0), TOFEL (minimum score 550) or offer an equivalent qualification

Methods for evaluating and improving the quality and standards of teaching and learning

  • Quality assurance procedures at a school level include course and module evaluation, questionnaires, regular student panels and student representation on committees

The Chartered Management Institute externally verifies programme operationalisation on an annual basis for the straight management provision, with a number of monitoring visits throughout the year
