Internet of Things (with Placement) - UH-000085

The recruitment and admissions process endeavour to ensure a good match between the abilities and aptitudes of the applicants and the demands of the programme. The aim is to facilitate widening participation whilst ensuring that students can reasonably expect to succeed on their chosen course.
An entrant will normally be a graduate in computing or engineering or a related discipline.  If entry is with a qualification at a lower level, but with compensating experience, the qualification and experience should both be in the area of computing and engineering.

Entry requirements for this course are normally:

<li>An Honours degree (2:1 or above) in one of the following subjects or a closely related science subject area or an equivalent professional qualification requiring a high level of numeracy.

<li>Mathematics</li>
<li>Computer Science</li>

<li>You are also encouraged to apply if you have other qualifications and/or experience and can demonstrate that you are equipped with knowledge and skills equivalent to Honours degree level.</li>

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. MSc Internet of Things (with Placement)
The MSc Internet of Things (with Placement) is awarded when students complete 240 credits on an approved course of study, which consists of,
<ul>
<li>180 credits of the MSc, consisting of: 120 credit - taught modules and 60 credit - individual project module - ‘Advanced Technical Project’,</li>
<li>And also 60 – credit Placement module - ‘Professional Development and Practice’.</li>
</ul>
The following regulations apply to MSc Internet of Things (with Placement):
<ul>
<li>The “MSc with Placement” route is full-time and therefore does not apply to part-time students.</li>
<li>In order to be eligible to take up the placement that they have found, a student must pass all 180-credits of the MSc course, confirmed at the appropriate Course Assessment Board (CAB).</li>
<li>Students on the “MSc with Placement” wishing to progress onto the placement module should be in good standing with the University and have confirmed, and had their placement approved, with the School before the end of the 12 month taught period.</li>
<li>September starters will usually begin their placement around October/November after the term 3 CAB.</li>
<li>January starters will usually begin placement around February/March after the term 1 CAB.</li>
<li>Securing a placement is the responsibility of the student.</li>
<li>Placements will be assessed for their suitability by the School in terms of their ability to fulfil the Learning Outcomes for the CSP3501/NSP3501 Professional Development and Practice module.</li>
<li>Placements should last between 18 and 24 weeks.</li>
<li>Students who do not have an agreed placement before the end of the 12-month taught period will exit with the award of MSc Internet of Things.</li>
<li>Any student failing the placement will not be able to retake this module and will be awarded the MSc Internet of Things.</li>
</ul>
In order to qualify for the exit awards listed below, the following credits are required:
PgDip Internet of Things
120 credits, consisting of all taught modules on the programme, but excluding CMI3420 Individual Project / NME3509 Advanced Technical Project.
PgDip Computing and Engineering Studies
120 credits, consisting of 60 credits from the CMI3420 Individual Project or NME3509 Advanced Technical Project module and 60 credits from any other taught modules on the programme.
PgCert Internet of Things
60 credits, consisting of 15 credits from the CMI3501 Emerging Technologies for Cyber Physical Systems module and 45 credits from any other taught modules on the programme.
PgCert Computing and Engineering Studies
60 credits, consisting of any taught modules on the programme, excluding the CMI3501 Emerging Technologies for Cyber Physical Systems module and CMI3420 Individual Project / NME3509 Advanced Technical Project.

Structure

An approved exception to the University of Huddersfield's Regulations for Awards is in place to allow this Master's with Advanced Professional Practice course to include "(with Placement)" at the end of the course title, rather than the standard "(Advanced Professional Practice)".

<div>All courses are accredited by the professional body, The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), as meeting relevant academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status. As a condition of accreditation, the following regulation, in addition to that currently found in the University of Huddersfield Regulations for Awards, must also be satisfied:</div>

<li>Where a module comprises two or more modes of assessment, all assessment components of weighting greater than 30%, are required to gain a minimum grade of no more than 10% below the pass mark.

Quality and Standards
<ul>
<li>The University’s Teaching and Learning Committee has ultimate responsibility for quality and standards of teaching and learning in the University.</li>
<li>The School Board, via the School Teaching and Learning Committee has responsibility for implementing University policy through school-defined procedures.</li>
<li>Periodic school and subject reviews take place on a rolling quinquennial programme and focus inter alia on the arrangements for quality management and enhancement, teaching, learning and assessment, C&amp;IT strategies, the articulation and assurances of standards, external examiner reports and evaluation and links with professional bodies, employers and other external organisations.</li>

<li>The Course Committee is responsible for the monitoring and development of the course or programme, taking account of feedback from staff, students and external examiners. Feedback is sought as follows:

Validation of Courses, Modules and Changes 
<ul>
<li>Course validation takes place under the University’s Quality Assurance Procedures for Taught Programmes.</li>
<li>Amendments to course/programme and module documents are validated by the School Accreditation and Validation Panel.</li>

Teaching and Learning
<ul>
<li>The School Teaching and Learning Committee, a sub-committee of the School Teaching and Learning Committee, is tasked with implementing the University’s teaching and learning strategy and with fostering innovation in teaching and learning and the dissemination of good practice.</li>
<li>A process for peer observation of teaching is in place with the object of enhancing teaching practice and sharing ideas between staff.</li>

The MSc Internet of Things course is ‘Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.’

<li>All students undertake Personal Development Planning.</li>
<li>The Course Leader is available to provide guidance on academic progress.</li>
<li>Module tutors are available to help with academic problems both inside and outside timetabled hours.</li>
<li>Supporting documentation is provided, either online or printed in the form of student handbooks, module handbooks, programme specifications and module specifications.</li>
<li>All modules and year groups are supported on the virtual-learning environment.</li>

The School of Computing and Engineering provides additional student support using a variety of approaches:
<ul>
<li>All students undertake an induction programme at the start of their studies.</li>
<li>All students have a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), with whom they should discuss academic difficulties. The PAT will refer tutees to central help facilities as appropriate.</li>
<li>A Guidance Team supports students with a wide range of Learning and Academic skills development (<a href="https://students.hud.ac.uk/unilife/sce/studentsupport/">Student Support - University of Huddersfield</a>), through seminars, workshops and 1-1 appointments.</li>
<li>A central computer-based attendance-monitoring scheme is operated and students with poor attendance are contacted and advised.</li>
</ul>
The School has a specialised placement unit offering extensive support to students undertaking placements within their course. This includes CV reviews, interview practice, placement searching and guidance on all aspects of the application process.
